This group of charts is an amazing blend of style, excitement, passion and raw energy! There is no doubt you will have to spend some time shedding this music with your band, but when it is all said and done, there is no doubt you will all be on the "edge of your seat!"
Sierra Music recommends programming your festival performance in the following order:
Lambeau Leap - Fred Sturm Written by one of America's finest jazz composers, Fred Sturm brings you a "doozy" with this energetic chart. It starts with a heavy shuffle feel, then moves to a half-time feel, then into a stop-time section which then goes back to the heavy shuffle. There is solo space for tenor, trumpet and drums. The drum solo is surrounded by sensational ensemble triplet figures. This chart is pure fun! 5-4-4-4
Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child - arr. Slide Hampton Arranged by Slide Hampton for the Maynard Ferguson Dream Band, this may well be one of the most beautiful big band pieces ever created. Slide keeps this spiritual set in a very respectful way and maintains the integrity of this gorgeous melody while letting the big band "speak", as well. There are no improvised solos, only outstanding ensemble writing. There are only 2 measures of high trumpet playing required. This is a marvelous chart to provide contrast in your festival program. 5-5-4-3 (or original instrumentation)
The Heat of the Day - Metheny & Mays / arr. Curnow To say this chart is a masterful, epic work is an understatement! Bob Curnow has harkened back to the iconic charts of "The First Circle" and "Minuano" in this endeavor, making "The Heat of the Day" top this rare list in regards to excitement and pure, raw energy. This chart contains all of the elements that you've come to expect from Metheny & Mays: a Latin/fusion feel, meter changes, amazingly expressive moods, and very, very exciting music. Your audiences will go bananas after hearing your band perform this chart! 5-4-4-4 (opt. percussion part, opt. parts for 10 brass)
