A Night At The Golden Nugget (Edited) - arr. by Bob Curnow Afternoon - Pat Metheny / arr. Curnow Bari Things You Do, The - Geoff Keezer
Hear The Music! See The Music!

Gene Roland wrote for the Stan Kenton Orchestra for almost the entire history of the Kenton Band. He wrote the entire “Adventure in Blues” album for that band, and this is just one of many highly original, swinging charts on that recording. This is the edited version written for standard big band instrumentation. There is also the Pro version available with original instrumentation. Bob Curnow’s edition of this eases some of the challenges of the original along with changing the instrumentation. It makes this a lot more fun to play. Alto sax and trumpet are soloists on this medium blues swinger. Roland at his best! 5-4-4-4
Here is a slow, swinging, lovely, warm, relaxed composition.  Geoff's original music is the best! It is unique, very melodic and extremely interesting.

As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Pop Goes the Basie." Call Me Irresponsible has that smooth, medium swing to get your listeners swaying back and forth. This chart is easy enough for most bands to play, but truly shines when performed with a Trombone soloist with charisma. 5-4-4-4

Full of up-tempo energy, Oliver masterfully intertwines the melody in the saxophones with counter-lines from the brass to create an incredible tapestry of sound.  This is exactly as recorded on the Hooper CD "Out of the Woods.

Much like Neil Hefti's "Li'l Darlin'," this Billy Byers original exemplifies quiet, warm ensemble writing at its finest.  Sierra continues to find the lost treasures from Maynard Ferguson's Birdland Dream Band Library.  Bill Holman titled this one after the signs which used to be in the old-time dance halls around the country.

 A true Kenton Classic.

Due to Covid-19 The Bob Curnow Big Band was not able to record this piece live. What you will hear is a Finale midi playback. We ask your understanding and look forward to being able to provide a recording of the great Curnow Big Band in the near future

Hear The Music! See The Music!

Bob Curnow dedicates this to his new grandson Eli whose middle name is Wolfgang. So, he had to have his own tune, right? Based on a medium slow, swinging feel, this chart moves quickly into a Basie-ish style with the tenors and trombones stating the theme. The 2nd statement is surrounded with lots of lines that weave in and out. This is followed by a tenor sax solo. The full ensemble then sets up the following trombone solo. The ensemble once again takes over for before the drums state some short solo passages. The chart ends as it began, nice and easy. 5-5-4-4 $50.00

Here is a wonderful "Basie-ish" chart with a catchy melody set in an easy-swing tempo.

Sierra Music is pleased to present yet another wonderful, contemporary composition by Patty Darling. She has provided us with many publications ranging from our “Easy-to-Play” series to the “Radiohead Jazz Project”. This new piece from Patty is a slow swing in 3/4 with elements of sparsity and transcendence throughout along with an abundance of solo space for flugelhorn that really intensifies this sentiment. “Gratitude” is the perfect contrasting piece for your program to add that element of variety every band and audience needs. (5-4-4-4)

Hear The Music! See The Music!

This Curnow original was inspired by the fact that there aren’t a lot of bass features available for up-and-coming bassists. The tempo is set at about 100, and the chart opens up with your bass player soloing (written or improved) for 12 bars before the band moves in with a cool, quiet, rich statement of the theme. The bassist then solos (written or improvised) for another 24 bars before the full band comes roaring in with a strong statement. The soloist then continues for a bit before the band takes over again. The piece ends as it began, with the band stating that cool statement of the theme to the end. Give your bass player a shot. She (or he) deserves it. Two different bass parts are included; one with a written solo throughout and one with just changes for the more mature player. Moderate ranges for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 5-4-4-4 $50.00

As recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Basie Picks the Winners." I'll Get By starts soft, then shouts to get your audience's attention. A subtle line of piano solos lets your pianist carry that Basie harmony throughout this short, but wonderful, chart. 5-4-4-4

The Bill Holman Great Big Band recorded this chart on the Capitol album (same name) in 1960.  Arranged by Bob Curnow to be played by a 10-piece small band, this great medium-swing chart has outstanding ensemble writing.

As Recorded by the Count Basie Orchestra on "Frankly Basie - Count Basie Plays the Hits of Frank Sinatra." A slow swing by bucket muted brass carries this song smoothly along. Long, open solos for Trumpet 4 and Piano will give your talented players space to show their creativity.  5-4-4-4

This is a nifty trumpet section feature, written with the young player in mind.  One of the great Basie recording was "The Legend", of which all the pieces were Benny Carter originals.  Geoff has taken this well-known Nat Adderley tune and given it a breath of fresh thinking, interesting voicings, and very playable phrases.

Hear The Music! See The Music!
Once again Billy Byers has created the quintessential, original chart for the Count Basie Orchestra. This one is recorded on “Basie Land.” The easy swing feel/tempo makes this piece very accessible for most bands. There is a bit of flute in two saxophone parts. There are solos for tenor and trumpet and piano. Of course there is the required, masterful “shout chorus” that leads to a quiet, cool ending. Moderate ranges for all makes this a very accessible chart for most bands. 5-4-4-4
