As recorded by the Oliver Nelson Orchestra, “Wannsee” is the 2nd movement of the Impressions of Berlin suite. This lovely, beautiful, haunting melody features flute and flugelhorn as they each get the opportunity to state this captivating theme. Set in a slow “3” Latin-ish feel, the lilting groove provides a mesmerizing backdrop for the melody, and eventually moves into a standard Bossa Nova groove in “4” for the featured flugelhorn soloist. Oliver is known for his brilliant writing, much of which is accessible for most any band. This chart is professional in its writing, yet quite playable due to its moderate ranges, rhythmic simplicity, and attainable tempo. If you’re looking for a unique ballad, this is the one! 5-4-4-3 (opt. 5th trombone, opt. percussion)
