What an historically important composition this is! While the late, great Lyle Mays was a student at (then) North Texas State University, he created this piece, knowing full well that he was constructing something entirely different for large jazz ensemble. The instrumentation alone (5 saxophones with 1 flute double on the tenor saxophone 1 part, three trumpets, flugelhorn, French horn, 3 tenor trombones, bass trombone, piano as soloist, guitar, bass, drum set and vibraphone) tells us that something special is about to happen. The recording, obviously, demonstrates the sounds of the chart. The 1st trumpet is written to a high F (once, and could easily be changed) and, depending on the tempo, the rest of the musical demands are quite reasonable for 1st trumpet and all players (but certainly different). This was recorded by the North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band in 1974 and the recording was also a part of the 50th anniversary of the Lab Bands CD collection (available from UNT). Sierra Music is publishing this piece with full score, parts and a facsimile of Lyle's original score with his autograph from that time. This is a very special publication for Sierra.
